TAORMINA WALKING TOUR AND
ITS WONDERFUL SURROUNDED AREA
Our tour will start, picking
you up from your place and enjoying a wonderful introduction to
the highlights of Taormina with your local expert guide. Our introduction
today will take us around the beautiful town of Taormina, situated
on a rocky plateau on the slopes of the steeply dropping Monte Tauro,
dominating the Ionian coast from Capo Sant'Andrea to Capo Taormina
with the Etna Volcano rising majestically in the background. The
downtown centre represents a variety of historical periods, from
the early Greek settlements and the Roman age, to the remains of
Byzantine and Medieval constructions up to the 15th Century Catalan
buildings and 17th Century Baroque churches and Palaces.
We will visit together the most
panoramic square "Belvedere square" with its unique breathtaking
view over the Messina coast line, all the Taormina bays, the
Catania coast line and our volcano Etna. We will then drive to the
charming medieval village of Castelmola, just above Taormina. We
will stroll several narrow picturesque streets with wonderful sea
and Etna views.
We also visit the antique 13th century Arab castle, situated on
the highest and most panoramic place in the area.
Together on foot, we will visit the Greek Theatre, one of the city
highlights built in the 3rd Century by the Greeks and later on almost
completely remodeled by the Romans. It is the second most important
and largest theatre in Sicily, surpassed only by the Greek Theatre
in Syracuse. We visit the court yard of Palazzo Corvaja which is
the most important medieval palace in town. We stroll along the
main street "Corso Umberto", arriving at the San Nicolò
Cathedral square. We will also have time to wonder its twisting
alleys or stroll in the Public Gardens, established in the 19th
century, with its three hectares of flower-beds, hedges and thick
vegetation. Entry to the gardens is free.
Good sturdy comfortable walking shoes are recommended for this 'Sicilian
Experience'.
