A Walk through the UNKNOWN SICILY AROUND ETNA
Volcano is one of the world's
most active volcanoes. It has been erupting since several million
years. Mt Etna is one of the greatest and beautiful volcano adventure
tour destinations in Sicily, beside many other which can be easily
enjoyed from our charming village of Taormina. This volcano has
more than 400 craters, split all over the Catania county. To the
ancient Greeks, Mount Etna was the realm of Vulcan, god of fire,
and the home of the one-eyed monster known as the Cyclops. Etna
offers skiing in the Winter months and breathtaking hikes in the
woods during the Summer. There are also a number of smaller peaks
on the slopes of Etna, and some interesting caverns. Since Etna
is a strato volcano, with relatively cool lava temperatures and
numerous openings (vents), nobody ever knows precisely where on
its vast surface the next eruption will be.
Our tour today will start, picking
you up from your place at your most convenient time and driving
to Unknown Sicilian villages around mount Etna. This is a different
way to explore our volcano and our Island, through typical charming
towns on the slopes our volcano. We will drive through different
local villages of the Alcantara Valley. We will visit the Alcantara
Gorges, with their wonderful waterfall created from an old Etna
lava eruption (40 miles long flow). We then continue the drive to
Francavilla, and visit the most charming and unspoiled old Sicilian
village of Castiglione di Sicilia and of course the several lemon,
orange and olive groves as well as the Etna grapevines. We will
have the chance to visit the famous old Greek fortress, situated
on the highest part of Castiglione with a breathtaking view over
the Alcantara valley.
The next highlight will be the view over the National Park of Etna
and the amazing valley filled with hazelnut trees - We will continue
through the Red wine-route, literally traversing the lava of 1981,
passing through the village of Linguaglossa, with its mass of Baroque
churches and famous for its delicious Almond and hazelnut pastries
typical of the area. Here we will enjoy a short stop to try some
of these fine local products in a traditional pastry shop before
heading to the well-known winery "Gambino" to tour the
wonderful property and the wine cellar and of course have a taste
of the unique tasteful Etna wines, accompanied by a selection of
local Sicilian products (on request)
